Week in Review November 12-15

Thanks for checking back on our blog. Here are a few highlights from this week.

In math, we have been continuing to improve our understanding of number and addition.  Students were provided with word problems and used manipulatives to help them solve the problems.  *Manipulatives are objects that are used so that students can better understand a math concept by manipulating it.  They provide an opportunity for students to learn concepts through hands on learning.*

Ask your child to solve this problem at home!  If Ms. Genno has 6 grapes and her mom gives her 3 more, how many grapes does she have?

During literacy, we came together as a whole group to work on our Reading Power skills.  This week we were focusing on questioning.  Good readers ask questions not only when they read but before and after they read the book.  We read the books Owl Moon and Wednesday Surprise.

In social studies, students were challenged with thinking about their community(Forest Heights/Calgary) and what buildings they see in their community.  They came up with a great list, including houses, schools, hospitals, libraries, swimming pools, the Calgary tower, office buildings and churches.  Next week we will begin building our community.
If you have any small boxes (eg. cereal boxes, granola bar boxes) in your home we would greatly appreciate if you send them with your child.

Weekly Assembly and Family Groups.  Every Friday we gather as a school community to celebrate others and recognize those students who have been demonstrating pillars of the Circle of Courage.  This week we celebrated those students who showed Belonging.
Family Groups occur once a month and are a school wide learning opportunity.  Students from K-5 are assigned to a classroom teacher for the year.  In Family Groups students work together on activities that encourage the pillars of the Circle of Courage.  This week we focused on Independence.  Ask your child what they did in their family group!

We had a chat about safety when students are outside at recess.  The students have been instructed that, for their safety,  if there is ice on the school grounds, they are not to go on in during schools hours.

Thank you for your continued support in your child's learning!

Ms. Genno and Ms. Gibb
